The model of commodity exports, which has been the development basis of the Russian economy for more than 30 years, has now completely exhausted itself. The dominant perspective for the Russian economy development is the transition to an innovative scenario. The problem of innovative economic development in Russia, as well as its individual regions, has become particularly relevant in the face of unfavorable international economic conditions and high geopolitical risks. Of particular note is the role of innovative entrepreneurship as a factor capable of ensuring a sustainable transition of the economy to an innovative development path. However, before we talk about the trends and prospects for the region’s economy development on the basis of innovative entrepreneurship, it is necessary to solve the problem associated with the assessment of its current state. The purpose of the work is to assess the current state of innovative entrepreneurship in the Vologda Oblast. To achieve this goal, we have solved the following tasks: we have scientifically substantiated the selection of statistical indicators characterizing innovative entrepreneurship; and analyzed the dynamics of the values of indicators for the Vologda Oblast, as well as in the context of other regions. The scientific novelty of the research is that the proposed algorithm for assessing the state of innovative entrepreneurship can be applied to other regions. According to the research results, we have obtained the following results: we have noted a significant increase in the proportion of organizations engaged in technological innovations, a moderate growth in the number of organizations that carried out research and development, an increase in the number of employees of innovative companies, as well as an increase in internal costs for research and development. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of innovative entrepreneurship in the region tends to slow down: for the period from 2016 to 2019, there is a decrease in the volume of innovative products.
