The article substantiates the urgency of the issue concerning the development of creative abilities of schoolchildren, as well as the importance of the teacher and educational process in its solution. The authors consider theoretical approaches to the definition of abilities and talents. A classification of abilities is given in the article. It is shown that the traditional approach in education at the present stage is complemented by creative forms of work with pupils. The authors have come to the conclusion that additional education institutions can play a significant role in the development of creative abilities in children. The Research-and-Education Centre under the Institute of Socio-Economic Development of Territories of the Russian Academy of Sciences educates schoolchildren using active learning methods, which are directed on the development of creative abilities in children. This education programme complies with modern requirements of new educational standards. The article describes the forms of work, applied and implemented at ISEDT RAS Research-and-Education Centre; they include contests of research works, meetings of the discussion club “Young economist”, excursions, specialized economic sessions in recreation camps, thematic weeks, creative workshops, etc. Such a variety of teaching methods and forms of work with the younger generation provides for the formation and development of creative thinking. The article concludes that ISEDT RAS Research-and-Education Centre has developed an efficient system of work with talented youth, which is focused on the development of competences necessary for every student
